Upon relocation from Toronto to Muskoka about eight years ago, distinguished Canadian artist Pat Fairhead started to teach a class, first at the Port Carling Community Centre, then at Gayle Dempsey’s Muskoka Place Gallery, and now in Bracebridge in Pat’s private studio. This is how “The Tuesday Group” started.

It was mostly women that came. Over the years there have been probably 25 or so participants, some who have stayed, some who didn’t and some who have been in and out for years. Most of those who came would say something like this, “I’ve always wanted to paint and when I was at school, I was squashed by the teacher,” followed by “Do you think there is any chance I can paint?” Pat, of course, said YES.

Some came with instruction behind them and hesitant to start again. Mixed together with or without instruction, Pat have said to all that learning is life-long and the ability to learn does not decrease with age – everything you do is right. They have taken it from there. On an individual encouragement basis, they have now a hugely divergent group of painters because each one has been gently steered and challenged to follow their own path.

Members of the “Tuesday Group” take their painting seriously. Some now have their own studio, some have started a Thursday group in a church basement in Bracebridge. In addition, they meet once a month for pot luck at Pat Fairhead’s house/studio with a guest speaker or a film.
